Researchers at Granada University in Spain announced that drinking beer is better at preventing dehydration than water alone, according to the Granada Olive Press, an English-language newspaper in Granada.

The months-long study shows beer can help quench thirst, hydrate the body and replace calories lost during physical exercise, university professor Manuel Castillo Garzon told the Olive Press.

The research involved 25 students, each forced to undergo intensive exercise in high temperatures after which they were tested for level of dehydration, concentration and motor skills, the Olive Press reported. Half of the test subjects were then given beer and water while the other half were given only water.

Results showed the students who drank the beer had better or equal rehydration to those who drank water, the Olive Press reported.
