The AU men's soccer team lost its home game against Virginia Commonwealth University 5-0 on Saturday following their 0-0 tie in double overtime with James Madison, on Wednesday.

Six minutes into the game, the Virginia Commonwealth Rams started the scoring early with an assisted goal that landed in the back of the net to place the Rams over the Eagles on the scoreboard 1-0.

AU was unable to stop the same scoring combination just 23 minutes later when the ball was chipped high over AU goalkeeper Chris Sedlak.

The game remained 2-0 going into the half with AU still unable to get themselves on the scoreboard. The Eagles brought a high intensity level to the start of the second half as they fired the first two attempted shots after the break.

The first shot was attempted by freshman Daniel Shannon but was quickly caught by VCU's keeper. Only 21 seconds later, sophomore Cameron Petty responded with yet another attempt to earn the Eagles a point but was unable to score with his high shot.

A Ram player broke loose and beat an Eagle defender down field, forcing AU keeper Sedlak to hold down the defensive end. The ball was chipped over Sedlak and straight into the net, pushing the score to 3-0.

The game was sealed as a shutout for VCU when the Rams added two more goals in the 64th and 74th minutes.

One yellow card was given out during play to an AU athlete. Despite their loss, the Eagles were relentless in trying to score as they outshot the Rams 14-13.

American will travel next Saturday to William and Mary to try to beat the Indians.
