Tightening of gun-purchasing policy issued by MD. governor

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, D, has issued a new gun purchase regulation that requires prospective buyers to sign a waiver releasing their mental health records to the state police, according to The Washington Post.
The ruling, which went into effect Aug. 1, is in response to the Virginia Tech shootings and applies to people who have been ordered by a court to seek treatment or those who have checked into a state psychiatric hospital for at least 30 days, the Post reported.
"We're trying to keep people who the law says can't buy a gun from buying one," State Police spokesman Greg Shipley told the Post. "This will enable us to determine if you are telling the truth as far as state facilities are concerned."
Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine, D, issued an executive order last April instructing state agencies to ban gun sales to people involuntarily committed to in-patient or out-patient mental health treatment, the Post reported.
