This is Halloween: Five shows and movies to add to your Netflix queue this weekend
Halloween is finally here, and what better way to spend the spookiest day of the year than with some Netflix and candy? Sadly, some of the classic childhood favorites aren’t on Netflix. I’m looking at you, “Hocus Pocus” and “Halloweentown.” But, this assorted list includes horror, absurdity, drama and classics, so there is an option for everyone.
American Horror Story, 2011-Present
American Horror Story takes viewers on a horror adventure, with each season set in a different creepy location. From haunted houses to asylums to circuses, AHS is jampacked with all the usual horror characteristics, so there is something for everyone. Although the show runs on cable television and so can’t be too gory and horrifying, it still manages to scare and excite the audience. AHS is a perfect show to binge watch on Halloween and afterwards, and promises many screams and creepy scenes.
2. The Nightmare Before Christmas, 1993
There is debate over whether or not “Nightmare Before Christmas” is more of a Halloween or Christmas movie, but in this case, let’s settle on Halloween. The people who have not heard of this movie are few and far between, so consider this a Public Service Announcement that it is on instant Netflix. For those who are unaware, this Tim Burton film is about a Halloween world that finds out about a Christmas world, and then tries to create their own Christmas by kidnapping Santa Claus and having their king, Jack, be the new Jolly Saint Nick. This is a perfect movie for those who want to relive childhood, sing along to great songs and not be too scared.
3. Killer Mermaid, 2014
The film is supposedly about a, well, killer mermaid, but in reality it is a much more absurd and overly dramatic film about two girls and their male counterparts who get trapped in an abandoned fortress and must deal with many ridiculous characters and killers. Although there are some visually scary and uncomfortable scenes, the awkward acting, strange storyline and ridiculous ending make it almost impossible to be afraid of. For those viewers out there who want a horror movie they know they can laugh at, this is the film to watch.
4. The Omen, 1976
“The Omen” is about a two parents who adopt a young boy, only to find out that he is the son of the devil. Many unsettling and unfortunate things happen to those around the child, Damien, together forming this two hour movie of suspenseful psychological terror. Though admittedly I did last watch this when I was fairly young, and it is not very visually terrifying, the themes in the movie are more than enough to elicit fear and leave you uneasy after watching it. For all those classic horror movie fans, this is the movie for you.
5. Salem, 2014-present
Loosely based on the Salem Witch Trials, this series follows the town of Salem as it deals with the infamous trials. It also incorporates magical and dark themes, bringing in a supernatural component to the show. While also going into themes such as friendship, love and loyalty, the show does mostly focus on its creepy plotlines. For those interested in history and horror, this is the show for you to binge watch around Halloween time.
