Lost premiere leads to more questions

By Maisie Hooper

On Tuesday Lost fans were treated to a filling two-part premiere episode. Opening with the familiar white flash was a sign that the island again moved through time. In the air, we see events transpire as they would have had Oceanic flight 815 landed in Los Angeles.

But how did Desmond get there? At that time, he should’ve been locked up in the hatch.

We are hit with a bit of nostalgia as we see some favorites who have since passed, like Boone, Charlie, and Claire. Thousands of miles beneath the plane we see the island completely submerged in water, perhaps what happened when the bomb went off.

Also in present time, but on the island, the gang tries to rescue Juliet from under the rubble. After she dies, Sawyer shoots death glares to Jack every chance he gets. Jacob appears to Hurley and tells him to take Sayid to the temple.

When they arrive, they are greeted by some cool guy who hates the English language and his John Lennon friend who translates. Hurley gives them the guitar case that holds the same cross that the giant Egyptian statue once held and a list with all of their names on it.

Oh Jacob, so cool you are, giving instructions from the grave. Inside, they try to heal Sayid in the spring, but are unsuccessful, until he miraculously wakes up moments later. Thank God, because the loss of one of the island’s founding bad-asses would have put me in the blues for the rest of the week.

Back in Jacob’s underground tapestry room, we learn that ‘The Man in Black’ is also the black smoke monster. When Jacob’s bodyguards from the Ajira 316 flight come in to confront Locke, the smoke monster throws them all over the place, even outsmarting one dude who tries to protect himself in a ring of some kind of powder.

Outside, ‘The Man in Black’ recognizes Richard and says, “good to see you out of those chains.” He then knocks out poor Richard, slings him over his back and then leaves. Because this bad guy now has his own story line, it’s clear that we won’t see any more from the real John Locke on the island, which is a bit sad because I’d place him in the group of founding bad-asses, what with his knowledge of knives, tracking, and his overall friendly grandpa persona.

Perhaps John Locke will come back to the island; as Jack says, “nothing’s irreversible.”
